Kuraray Co., Ltd. announced the development of the SEPTON V Series, hydrogenated styrene thermoplastic elastomers (TPE)(hereafter, hydrogenated styrene elastomers) that will provide compounds with improved heat resistance and oil resistance.
Unlike earlier SEPTON products, the SEPTON V Series contains a crosslinkable hard blocks and makes it reactive. Kuraray has also developed special compounding technology which makes it possible to cross-link the hard blocks as well as the soft blocks during compounding. This provides a compound with higher heat and oil resistance, which makes them suitable for use in markets in which vulcanized rubber is used such as automotive sealing material and construction materials.
SEPTON is a series of high performance thermoplastic rubbers (TPE) developed by KURARAY CO., LTD. using its unique isoprene technology. In terms of structure, SEPTON is a series of hydrogenated styrenic block copolymers(SEP ,SEPS ,SEEPS , SEBS), and it exhibits rubber-like properties over a wide range of temperatures. Its remarkable characteristics are as follows:
- Excellent Mechanical Properties
- Good Weatherability
- Excellent Low Temperature Properties
- Excellent Electrical Insulation Properties
- Superior Heat Resistance
- Excellent Chemical Resistance
- Low Toxity
Prior to processing, the polystyrene end blocks are associated in rigid domains. In the presence of heat and shear such as during processing, the polystyrene domains soften and permits flow. After cooling, the polystyrene domains reform and harden, locking the rubber network in place. This physical phenomenon provides SEPTON with its high tensile strength and its elasticity. Since SEPTON is a thermoplastic, it is recyclable.
Based on 20 years of experience in the field of elastomeric block-co-polymers Kuraray developed a new material with remarkable characteristics. The new material is available as neat polymer - Septon Q series. Moreover an alloy technology applied onto this new material generates a novel class of TPE which enters the application areas of TPAE, TPEE and TPU. The alloys show advantageous processing properties and good performance in combination with polyolefins.
The new material fi rst was presented under the name Q-Polymer. It comes now to markets under the brand name Septon Q series. It is a novel class of elastomeric polymers for common use in the field of thermoplastic elastomers. Its outstanding performance can be generated with Kuraray's own alloy technology that creates light and scratch resistant materials. These alloys work well together with various polyolefi ns and even polymers with some polarity.
The first commercial application after setting up the new material was in specialized soccer shoes. In this shoe sole a very good abrasion resistance is combined with the advantage of a light weight material. For this application Kuraray entered into an exclusive agreement with the customer. TPU shows a specific gravity level of 1.2 vs. 0.9 roughly for the Septon Q series alloy.

Kuraray Co.Ltd.has thus far developed and marketed the SEPTON™ V Series and the SEPTON™ Q Series within its SEPTON™ and HYBRAR™ families of high-performance, highly functional thermoplastic elastomer products. To enhance and reinforce its lineup, Kuraray has now developed the SEPTON™ K Series which features superior bondability to glass and metal.
Like a number of other plastic products, SEPTON™ and HYBRAR™ hydrogenated styrenic thermoplastic elastomers can be easily molded; however, they are also characterized by rubber-like elasticity and are widely replacing vulcanized rubber as a soft molding material. Combining Kuraray's accumulated polymer synthesizing technologies and alloy technologies, the newly developed SEPTON™ K Series material represents a new concept in elastomeric materials. Existing products require pretreatment with primer to obtain the bondability needed for use on glass and metal. However, the SEPTON™ K Series can be directly injection molded or extruded onto glass or metal without pretreatment, achieving excellent bondability while retaining the advantages of a thermoplastic elastomer. Thanks to its excellent bondability the SEPTON™ K Series is a revolutionary molding material that enables faster production and a high degree of freedom in product design, particularly in such fields as automotive, electric and electronics, and other glass-related components. Pursuing further advances in product and market development, Kuraray expects this product to enter the film, sealant, coating and adhesive fields.
Kuraray is accelerating global applications development by commencing SEPTON™ K Series marketing simultaneously in Japan, Americas, Europe and Asia, with a view of expanding its elastomer business. This innovative material will become the heart of a new core line of products.

KURARITY are novel (Meth)acrylic TPEs that have block structures like PMMA-b-PnBA-b-PMMA. Kuraray has pilot plant of KURARITY in Japan and started limited marketing now.
Kuraray announces that it recently decided on the brand name "KURARITY" for its new acrylic thermoplastic elastomer (development name: "LA Polymer"), the full-scale business development of which the Company had made public in March 2010.
There are several grades from sticky softest grade to tough and rigid grade. All grades and their blends have excellent transparency and wheater-ability like PMMA resin. So we called them "flexible PMMA" . Other characteristics of KURARITY are low melt viscosity, good adhesion to polar plastics like PMMA,PC,ABS etc, and good paint-ability.
Possible applications of KURARITY and their compounds are follows:
1) injection molding especially 2K-moulded soft parts like grips for IT devices, home appliances and Automotive interior parts.
2) flexible and transparent films with small patterns for optical devices.
3) hot melt or high solid acrylic based pressure sensitive adhesives.
4) additives for very flexible Polylacticacid (PLLA) alloy and other impact modifiers of PMMA, PC, PBT etc.
